IMG_1714.JPG

Butoh Artist & Photo-Performer. Performing Arts Researcher, Stage director, Playwright, Poet.

Taijiquan practitioner and compulsive traveller.

Gustavo is a Mexican multifaceted artist focused on performance. He has studied since his teenage years in Mexico City with the most renowned teachers of Mexican theatre and traveled all around the world, learning from the most important Butoh masters in Japan and North America, and adopting the style of Butoh called “Butoh of light” from the line of Kazuo Ohno, the creator of Butoh in the 1950s.

Without being a professional photographer, and after working with Italian photographer and performer Manuel Vason, he has adopted photography as a way of translating his visual arts perspective unto the stage, guided by the concept of Photoperformance.

He has performed Butoh in Mexico, Lebanon, Spain, Japan and many cities throughout China. He has exhibited his photographs in New York, San Francisco, Mexico City and Guangzhou, and published in art magazines and books.

“Pride Chinese Style” is his own 4-year photo-performance project focused in witnessing the way the members of the LGTBQ+ community in Guangzhou express their own pride.
